Speech & Language Therapy

Speech and language therapy (SaLT) supports a child’s communication needs, including understanding and using spoken language, developing clear speech and building social communication skills such as conversation, interaction and self‑advocacy. Therapy is tailored to each child, including multimodal approaches, such as signs, symbols, gestures and other visual communication methods, as appropriate, to support successful communication in everyday life.

Auditory Verbal Therapy

Auditory Verbal Therapy (AVT) supports children with a hearing loss to develop their listening and spoken language skills using their hearing technology, such as hearing aids, cochlear implants, bone-anchored hearing aids. This approach focuses on building listening skills in order to understand and communicate through spoken language. Parent coaching is a core part of AVT, giving families practical strategies they can use in everyday interactions with their child. Children with a hearing loss who have additional needs can also benefit from this therapy approach.

Ayres Sensory Integration

Ayres Sensory Integration® (ASI) supports children with experience sensory processing difficulties by helping them better understand, organise and respond to sensory information. Through play‑based, structured activities set at the just‑right level of challenge, ASI builds coordination, attention and self‑regulation, supporting the child’s participation, engagement and communication in everyday life. By improving sensory regulation and engagement, ASI also lays important foundations for communication development, complementing Speech and Language Therapy and helping children benefit more fully from SALT input.

ASI sessions can take place in a sensory gym, or in the child’s home or educational setting, depending on which best supports their needs.

What to expect

Initial phone call

If you would like to find out more about how I can support your child, you can arrange a free 20 minute initial phone call. This call allows you to share information about your child's current needs and is an opportunity to discuss whether I am able to provide the right support for you and your child.

Initial Assessment

The initial assessment session lasts up to 90 minutes and may include formal tasks, informal activities, and observations. Information is also gathered from discussions with you and, where appropriate, other professionals involved with your child. If more than one session is needed to gather a complete picture of your child's needs, this will be discussed with you. Following the assessment, we will agree on an intervention plan and next steps.

Therapy sessions

Therapy sessions last up to 60 minutes and can be delivered in the place that works best for your child - at home, in their nursery or school, or in a clinic in Leeds. Online sessions are also an option if this is clinically appropriate.

Review Sessions

Review sessions last around 60 minutes and provide a focused opportunity to check your child’s progress against their current targets. This helps guide the next steps, whether that’s continuing therapy, allowing time to consolidate new skills, making an onward referral, or bringing therapy to a close. Ongoing discussions with you, and with other professionals involved, offer valuable insight into how your child is developing and how their progress is observed in everyday situations.

Reports

A report can be provided on request following the initial assessment, either as a summary of findings or a more detailed diagnostic report if needed. Reports can support the Education, Health and Care Needs Assessment (EHCNA) process and can also be written to inform EHCP reviews. Each report includes tailored advice and targets to help guide support for your child at home and in school.

Parent Consultations

Parent consultations can be arranged as needed or on a regular basis. They last up to 60 minutes and can be in person or online. These sessions offer dedicated time for you to discuss how therapy is progressing, plan next steps and to ask any questions you may have, with the space to focus fully without your child present.

Training

Bespoke training sessions can be provided on request for your child's educational setting and others supporting your child. Regular liaison with the professionals working within your child's wider team will take place, with your permission, as part of the therapy support.
